The Tour
A visit to Ostia Antica is essential for understanding an ancient Roman
city and its everyday life. Known by some as “the poor man's Pompeii,”
Ostia Antica is a great way to see an entire Roman city, deserted since
late antiquity though superbly preserved at the height of the empire,
without having to travel too far from the Italian capital. Actually
Ostia Antica is probably better preserved than Pompeii and it certainly
doesn't have the same crowds visiting it. Ostia means mouth and this
is the mouth of the Tiber River during the second century AD, where the
coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea stood, about 15 miles from Rome.
During your visit you will see lots of points of interest that unravel
a vibrant day in a ancient Roman city: the Decumanus Maximus (main axis
of the town); well articulated roads; apartment blocks; boutiques under
arcades; domus dwellings; warehouses, bakeries, and barracks; the
ancient Piazza del Foro; temples dedicated to Roman gods and Oriental
cults; an amphitheatre that is still in use today; some splendid
mosaics and interior frescoes, and more mundane things like graffiti
and the public loos! Most importantly we will see a how the Romans
lived at the height of their empire in a snap shot of late antiquity
Roman life.
