The Tour

When in Rome for Lent (the forty days before Easter), one of these itineraries is a must.  We are providing from a choice of two historical and devotional journeys through several of Rome’s most fascinating basilicas to explore one of the city’s most ancient traditions -- the Lenten Station.

Many people arrive in Rome a little before Easter to visit Rome’s many Station Churches.  For this purpose ItalyWithUs is offering a choice of two unique itineraries.

The first begins on the Aventine Hill, one of Rome’s “Seven Hills,” with an introduction to the tradition of the Lenten Stations.  After that we explore the spectacular Basilica of Santa Sabina discovering its artworks and remarkable history.  We then venture off to explore three other wonderful Roman churches and learn of their importance as Lenten Stations, discovering their amazing artworks as we go.  These churches are Santa Maria in Cosmedian, one of Rome’s most charming medieval basilicas and home of the “Mouth of Truth”; San Giorgio in Velabro, an evocative church tucked next to the imposing Arch of Janus, Saint Nicola in Cacere build on the site of three Roman temples.  We end our itinerary on the famous Capitoline Hill at the splendid Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoelio which occupies a prime site on the ridge of hill looking across the entire ancient Roman Forum.

Our second Lenten itinerary begins in the Roman Forum itself at the numinous church of Santa Maria Antiqua (Santa Francesca Romana), the oldest and most important church in the Forum.  This gives as a chance to explore a little of the ancient imperial surrounds and discover how Christianity was born out of the spoils of paganism.  We then go on to the Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian, a 4th century pagan temple, with 6th century Roman mosaics transformed into a Christian basilica.  After that we then head up the Oppian Hill to the famous Church of St. Peter in Chains where we’ll see Michelangelo’s monumental stature of Moses and the legendary chains of St. Peter which bound the Apostle in the Mamertine Prison.  Our itinerary ends at the Roman House of Equitius, a domus (Roman house) of a Roman noble from the 2nd century whose residence became the foundation of one of Rome’s many basilicas, namely, Saint Martin in Monti.  We may even have the opportunity to go underground to see the subterranean infrastructure of the domus.

Besides being Station Churches, during Lent each of these basilicas expose all their treasures, in some cases without closing for the siesta, giving us the opportunity to see the catacombs, crypts, chapels, saint’s rooms and in some cases, underground roman buildings, that are normally not open to the general public.

Each of these tours gives us the opportunity to see some of Rome’s most amazing and oftentimes overlooked artworks and ancient Roman temples.  They will also give us the chance to see two of the city’s most spectacular panoramas, from the Orange Garden on the Aventine Hill, and the precipice of the Capitoline Hill.

Many other surprises and fascinating religious artifacts await us on these unique Lenten pilgrim’s itineraries.
